Artist's Statement

In my work I use the human figure with all of its expressive possibilities to explore elements of our humanity.  The work is usually narrative and the figures are often based on people I know or have heard about; yet just as often they are invented characters and personalities that intrigue me.  Often I include allusions to art history, mythology or my own personal history in the works.

I use oil paint, heavily applied and often mixed with collage in my 2-D works and clay and other mixed media such as wood, collage and found objects in my sculptural work. My materials  are texturally rich and  expressive and allow me to communicate my feelings about my subject.  These artworks are often colorful and exhuberant too and address contemporary concerns such as personal power, sexual politics, loss and fear.
